Media seems to be doing a 180 on Irvin.....

Postby SeahawkSal » Mon Apr 30, 2012 8:24 am

The more I read, the more it seems the talking heads are backtracking on their initial draft grades on us.

More importantly, actual NFL front office employees and scouts seem to love the pick. The best news though is that the NY Jets wanted Irvin and when Seattle picked him, they called the Seahawks and playfully cursed them out. Anybody who knows me knows I hate the NY Jets with a passion that is indescribable.

Here is a article by Len Pasquarelli that is relevant as well:

All in all no matter what, any draft pick is a gamble...some more than others. But we as fans (myself included) are usually molded by what has been pounded in our heads from TV and from reading numerous mock drafts. Nobody really knows.....but the scouts know more than the regular media.

I hope all our draft picks pan out because we are going to need them. 7-9 will NOT cut it again this year.

It's interesting to watch it develop througout the year. These kids go out and excel at the college level and while some do quite well, we know more times than not they don't. Consider this each team is allowed to have 53 players on its roster (plus a five-player practice squad). As of 2011, the NFL has 32 teams, making a total of 1,696 players.

The question to be asked would be how many of these guys were sure things? How many were "reaches?" The only thing you can do is scout and study ... and even then it doesn't always translate look at some of the greats ... Montana, Brady, Rice and our very own Largent ... meanwhile guys like Leinart, Torretta, Smith, Ward, Wuerffel, Crouch, Ware, White, Salaam ... all these guys were the best college football had to offer laying claim to the Heisman; how many made an impact in the league?

It's easy to sit back and cry foul, always hoping for the sweet pick that "everyone" gushes over. Guys like Mayock and Kiper, sure they watch games (just like we do) they may even do a little extra searching on these guys but more times than not they also whiff.
Hello NFL; I don't believe we've been properly introduced ... We Are the Seattle Seahawks and We Are Here to Serve Notice

WTF does Mayock know? If a dipshit with a lisp can talk on TV and Radio then a Irvin will be just fine.

-- Bruce Irvin Admits Mistakes --
Sun Apr 29, 2012 --from FFMastermind.com

The National Football Post reports people are taking shots at the Seattle Seahawks for taking DL Bruce Irvin in the first round, but the truth is if they didn’t take him someone else would have. Among the teams that coveted him were the Texans and Chargers. Word around the league is the 49ers liked him so much they might have traded up for him. Part of what helped Irvin overcome his questionable character stigma is he wrote a personal email to each of the 32 teams a little more than one week before the draft. It was a letter than came from the heart and was not edited by his handlers. Irvin admitted making mistakes and said he has grown from them, and asked the NFL to give him a chance.

I personally think all questions will be answered when he sacks the shit out of Hasselbeck in preseason game 1. I think he gets two that game and it's like Demarcus Ware in his first preseason as a Cowboy...against who else but the Hawks..2005.

Well, that's what I'm hoping for at least. :rofl

I'm hopeful for this guy

The one thing that rubs me the wrong way about the pick and it's analysis is that all you hear is that it's a passing league

You better have a QB, guys who can catch the ball and then on defense a good secondary and the ability to consistently get after the QB

Seatle has struggled with consistently getting after the QB ..... especially on the road ....... it's really feast or famine and teams can scheme around their pressure ....... this is what leads to those fun 3rd and 12 pickups that constantly happen

They need to upgrade their pass rush to get at the passing driven league and get off the field

This was an established need with many pundits having seattle picking a DE to address the need

However, when seattle goes out an grabs a guy who is an athletic freak and excels at rushing the passer ... a guy that fits their scheme to boot it's all of a sudden a reach pick

How can seattle reach to draft a one trick pony ..... all that guy can do is rush the passer .... blah blah

So what is it ....... is pass rusher super important and seattle needed one and got one? - if so does it really matter if Irvin is really only known to be good in passing situations in a passing league on a team that needs help in that category?!

Well said, I often think about this same logic with later round picks.

7 rounds, 32 - ish picks per round...If I told you we were going to get 10 of the top 250 players in the nation this year, that sounds pretty cool! Yet we place so much value on the first round, is there really that big of a gap in skill between the 250?

History says not. More draft picks = better odds at filling the roster with the talent needed to win it all. Rookie salary cap only enhances this.

Where was DeMarcus Ware drafted?
