3rd Round, #75 pick: Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin

Postby Shadowhawk » Fri Apr 27, 2012 8:53 pm

Strengths
Wilson is an accurate passer. He is a very mechanical quarterback who not only is consistent in his drop step, but also understands how to move within the pocket and evade when the pocket collapses. He is an athlete and can torque his body to make any sort of throw on the run, and is accurate in this setting. He is a born signal-caller who shows command of the offense. He has the arm strength to make the deep throws and the touch to put it on a receiver in stride. He is effective when scrambling and extending plays.

Weaknesses
Wilson's height will be his biggest inhibitor at the next level and the largest reason for his late-round value. It remains to be seen if he can throw effectively from the pocket at the next level.

Not surprised in the least that we took this kid, though if we drafted him I figured it would happen in the fourth round.

No idea where they plan on using him since he is short, and either Portis or Tjack has to go.

IMO if your going to take a QB, take Cousins.

worst pick ever. complete waste of a pick.

You can't be 5'10" and play QB in the NFL, no matter how fast you are, or how strong your arm is. It's simply impossible. We just WASTED a pick.

This is horrible. Indefensible, unless he's our new nickelback or he returns punts.

stupid pick. WTF is the matter with FO/Carroll?

immature criminally inclined moron who can only do one single thing decent and was only able to do that good two years his entire life with our first round pick.
decent but undersized second round pick.
un-needed, pointless pick of an undersized QB that we have no use for at three....

WTF!?! all of these guys could have been gotten way later in the draft! all of these guys are undersized! and a QB is just a stupid position to draft!!!

NFL.com lists him at 5'11", which is only 1 inch smaller than Drew Brees who has done pretty well for himself.

I'm interested in seeing how we get Wilson his reps myself, but I really like Wilson as a player and I think T-Jack is on his way out this fall.

Complete waste of a pick? Isn't that what they said about Hass?

Michael Lombardi just made a good point: teams are going to be looking for backup quarterbacks and not all of them will be able to get one in the draft. T-Jack is solid enough that he might have some trade value for a team needing depth at the position.

We know that the team wont carry 4 QB's on the roster. Somebody has to go and its not Flynn or Wilson.

Hearing Gruden gush about this guy makes me wonder what Flynn is thinking right now.

The offensive line stands out — and tall.

The smallest Badger this year is 6-foot-7, 300 pounds. The biggest is 6-8, 350. Ten of the 16 are from Wisconsin and none of the others is from any farther away than Columbus, Ohio.

http://www.omaha.com/article/20110928/BIGRED/709289704

And I'm guessing the defensive linemen he played against weren't much smaller.

The height is a factor, but it doesn't tell the whole story. This kid could have been a first rounder if he was just a couple of inches taller. He has the talent and all the intangibles.

Here's the Gruden QB Camp segment with Russell Wilson. Definitely worth watching if you want to learn more about this kid.

Do you know how tall Vick is? 1" taller, that's it. When "weaknesses" are addressed on this guy his height is his only flaw. Not a bad pick at all IMO

3rd Round, #75 pick: Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin

Postby HawkerBacker » Fri Apr 27, 2012 9:47 pm

I think this is actually a good pick if a little high on the board. Just listened to the ESPN interview with Wilson and he sounds like an intelligent, bright player. A smart QB I'm good with and think Tarvaris is on his way out prior to the season with this pick!

Drew Brees is closer to 6-1 and is the exception to the rule. Vick might be 6-0 but he's an athletic freak, not a great QB. IF the best justification for the Russel Wilson pick is that he's only 2-3 inches shorter than Brees or Vick, you've proved my point. He's substantially shorter than the shortest, successful quarterbacks in the NFL of this century.

I'm a Seahawks fan, so I'd love to be wrong on this.... but I'm not.

WORST. PICK. EVER. Even this frakkin punter Jacksonville drafted in the third round will contribute far more than Wilson.

Hasselbeck wasn't a draft pick, we traded for him. Unless you're referring to what Packer fans said about him. And he was a 6th round pick, wasn't he? I agree completely that this was a complete waste of a draft pick. Russell sucks. It is brutally clear that Pete Carroll doesn't know what he's doing; he's completely blown this draft, wasted our opportunities to improve this team because he cannot evaluate and judge talent, and has set this team back for years. We're well on our way to a 5th straight losing season because of Carroll's incompetence. Carroll must be fired, and it'll have to wait until after the 2012 season, Seahawks fifth straight losing season. Carroll can go back to being a college coach and getting a program put on probation with forfeited games, and maybe, just maybe, the Seahawks will get a real GM who can evaluate talent and a coach who knows what the hell the NFL is all about.

Sando's Take:

RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks said they would have strongly considered drafting Ryan Tannehill with the 12th overall choice, had the quarterback been available.

Tannehill was gone to the Miami Dolphins by the time Seattle selected. The Seahawks, by selecting Wisconsin's Russell Wilson in the third round Friday, proved they were serious about considering a quarterback in the draft -- the first time the team has drafted one since hiring coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider in 2010.

Matt Flynn remains the favorite to start for Seattle in 2012. Tarvaris Jackson projects as a veteran backup, at least; Carroll has promised him a chance to compete for the starting job. Wilson gets a roster spot by virtue of his draft status, calling into question what this move means for developmental quarterback Josh Portis.

Teams generally keep two or three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. Flynn and Wilson will almost certainly be part of that mix. Jackson and/or Portis could be, too. Would the Seahawks keep four? Could Portis land on the practice squad? All of that will shake out during training camp. For now, the Seahawks have a competitive situation at quarterback, and quite a few unanswered questions.

The more I read up on our new players the more I like the direction Pete and Schneider are taking our team.

Our players are athletic freaks that play hard and smart.......................These are not hyped Kiper players, which is good, he is a master of hot air. My only question is would these players be available a couple picks later. We don't know.............I do know that our team is going to be crazy nuts on Defense!!!This is going to be a fun ride if we stay healthy. We are improved. Pieces of the puzzle are coming together, and the roster is getting tweaked just right. Love it!!!!!OUr team is loaded with FREAkS!!!Gifted. Truely.

Solid Draft IMO.

I've got to echo your sentiments Riverside ... I don't do this scouting of players for a living and I've got to trust those guys who do. Do they get it right every year or even every pick no, but what we think is the right pick or need; isn't the one the FO is thinking about.

They are addressing need and have a specific skill set, measurement package they want to see fit. Will it always be designer wear? No and while it would be good, the piece of designer wear we went for in Curry, which according to Kiper was the sure thing ... well he's in a different uniform.

The motors and determination the guys we've selected thus far are lining up pretty good and we've still got seven more picks to go. Looking forward to seeing how all these fit ...

I love this pick. Talent wise they drafted a top 5 QB in the 3rd, and they also got a kid who wins games and is very smart. I don't completely buy into the height issue, Seneca Wallace was never more than a serviceable back up because he was an ordinarty talent not because he was 5'11''. HIs height will inhibit him to some degree, but I don't think that will be the deciding factor on whether he is good at the NFL level or not.

We also addressed a huge need at QB. I think it's ridiculous people think otherwise, Matt Flynn is anything but a sure thing and he needs someone to compete with for the job. I'm not saying we found our next QB of the future, but we still addressed a need and he has a lot of potential just like Flynn.

I'm excited to see what happens in training camp and the preseason, hopefully one of these guys will show some promise and let the best man win.
